In coming up with a measure for generosity, the site looked at how much people donate as a percentage of their net income, and the proportion of people in a given county who made charitable donations.
In devising the first metric, the site calculated net income for residents in each county, then divided county residents' total income by total donations.
For the second figure, the company took the total number of tax returns with charitable contributions and divided that figure by the total number of tax returns filed overall.
Combining those figures, Somerset County was found to have a "Most Generous Places" score of 69.8. Somerset is wedged in an especially magnanimous corner of the state -- the number one and two spots were taken by neighboring Hunterdon and Morris counties, respectively.
